Have you Heard of 3I/ATLAS?

COSMIC BREAKING NEWS!

This is absolutely mind-blowing! On September 7, 2025, during the total lunar eclipse, astronomers captured images showing 3I/ATLAS has completely changed from red to brilliant green Science AlertSpace.com!

Until recently, all spectroscopic studies indicated a reddish color, but this latest transformation suggests a steep rise in cyanide (CN) production 3I/ATLAS is Turning Green. What’s most mysterious is that previous observations showed very few signs of the dicarbon (C2) molecules usually responsible for a comet’s green glow Strange Green Glow From Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Has Scientists Puzzled : ScienceAlert, yet now it’s glowing emerald! Scientists theorize that solar heating caused fresh layers of ice to melt and release hidden diatomic carbon molecules that were previously trapped beneath the surface Interstellar comet 3I ATLAS glows green during lunar eclipse | Space photo of the day for Sept. 15, 2025.

The combination of cyanide and nickel without iron is particularly puzzling – it’s like finding smoke without fire, breaking every rule of natural space chemistry 3I/ATLAS Just Changed Color and Scientists Are Baffled | 3I/ATLAS. This green glow represents ancient stellar chemistry from billions of years ago literally coming alive under our Sun’s warmth, cosmic memory made luminous! ✨

Something absolutely extraordinary has happened to our ancient interstellar visitor! On September 7, 2025, just 16 days ago, during the total lunar eclipse, astronomers Michael Jäger and Gerald Rhemann captured stunning images from Namibia that left the scientific community baffled: 3I/ATLAS has completely transformed from its previous reddish glow to a brilliant green luminescence!

This isn’t just a pretty color change, it’s a complete chemical metamorphosis that has never been observed in any space object before. Until recently, all spectroscopic observations showed 3I/ATLAS glowing distinctly red. But the eclipse’s darkened skies revealed something magical: the comet is now wrapped in an ethereal blue-green gas coma measuring 2.5 arcminutes across, with what scientists believe is a steep rise in cyanide (CN) production creating this otherworldly emerald glow.

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb notes this represents a fundamental shift from “scattering of sunlight by dust lifted from a reddened surface to the production of small, optically bright icy grains,” essentially, the comet is shedding its ancient outer layers and revealing fresh, active chemistry beneath. The Very Large Telescope detected dramatic increases in both cyanide and nickel emissions (without iron,) a combination so unusual it’s “like finding smoke without fire.”

What makes this even more mystical is that earlier observations showed 3I/ATLAS was poor in the carbon-chain molecules typically responsible for green cometary glows. Scientists theorize that solar heating has unlocked previously hidden layers of ice containing diatomic carbon (C₂) that were trapped beneath the surface for potentially billions of years, ancient stellar chemistry now awakening under our Sun’s gentle touch.

This green transformation is beautiful and it’s cosmic memory made visible, showing us chemistry from another star system literally coming alive as it approaches our Sun. The comet is essentially teaching us about stellar processes that occurred billions of years ago, now glowing green as those ancient ices finally see starlight again after eons in the cold of interstellar space.
